Cabana Club

A poolside bar on a hotel roof in Hanoi, asked to feel like Miami. The risk in that brief is obvious South Beach pastiche is a short distance from a themed bar  and the work avoids it by committing to one technique and executing it properly.

That technique is scissors. The whole visual language is physical collage: 1950s swimwear figures cut from period photography and recombined with botanical plates, parrots, tigers, halved tomatoes. The seams are left visible. Nothing is blended, which is exactly what stops it reading as a stock tropical treatment.

The wordmark is drawn as water  rippled, doubled contours, as though seen through the surface of a pool. Soft-edged seventies rather than art deco, which would have been the obvious quotation and would have dated the room immediately. Navy, coral, mint, blush and gold, applied to coasters, matchboxes, and a concentric ripple graphic on the pool floor itself.
