O Macanese
Macanese food is what happens when Portuguese cooking spends four hundred years in southern China. The identity had to be the same collision, made visible in about a second, to a guest walking past an open kitchen in Hanoi.
The answer is a wall. A hand-painted dragon coiling across a black arch drawn in Chinese temple style, but with its body filled in blue-and-white pattern that belongs equally to Ming ceramics and Portuguese azulejo tile. One image that is genuinely both things at once, rather than two references placed side by side.
The line work extends into engraved illustrations a noodle bowl, a galleon under sail, a wine glass in fired clay red, gold and cobalt. Signage is neon: the wordmark in red glass against lacquer. Three colours, one illustration style, one mural. Another decorative layer would have turned it into pastiche.
